  32. This  is  the  LIMITED VERSION of CanonStudio.  You can use it for
  33. printing  pictures.   Though,  many  functions  have been disabled
  34. forcing  you to register and get the latest full featured version.
  35. This  program  is included as free offer to all Canon users and is
  36. not  part of the main Canon drivers.  Canon is not responsibel for
  37. any support, update or warranty regarding CanonStudio.
  38.  
  39. CanonStudio  is especialy recommended to all users using the Photo
  40. Ink  cartridge  of  the  new  Canon  printers.  Note that only the
  41. registered CanonStudio offers you real Photo Ink output.
  42.  
  43. In  case  you use CanonStudio register the program or this product
  44. will  most likely not be supported in the future (programs do cost
  45. more  than  time  to  develop).   Also,  your  shareware fee is my
  46. motivation  for  enhancements.   If you like, you may also buy the
  47. commercial  "Studio"  printer  software  from  your  Amiga  dealer
  48. instead of registering CanonStudio.  Studio does additionaly offer
  49. you  a nice printed manual, driver support and drivers for various
  50. non-Canon printers.

  52. Registered   users   get   an  update  service  and  an  unlimited
  53. CanonStudio version for all orig. Canon drivers.

  55. ATTENTION:   We  are  planning a release of CanonStudio on CD ROM.
  56. This would allow us to ship additional software.  The price of the
  57. CD ROM  will  most likely be equal to the disk version.  So please
  58. note  if  you  would  prefer a CD ROM of CanonStudio.  In case the
  59. CD ROM  is  available  you  will receive the CD ROM instead of the
  60. floppy  disk  version.   Note that the CD ROM will not include any
  61. printed  manual  - instead will offer ready to print dumpfiles for
  62. your printer.  This safes us a lot of postage costs and thus makes
  63. the CD-R more affordable.

  101. a  huge  amount of users not paying the proper amount when sending

  111. I  know,  reading the "Readme" file of the drivers is a real pain.
  112. But there is a real printed manual available with pictures and all
  113. that  nice  stuff.   The manual is part of the commercial "Studio"
  114. printer software described above (Studio is available from JAM and
  115. other distributors/dealers).

  118.                     INSTALLING CANONDISK
  119.                     --------------------
  120.  
  121. CanonDisk   is   divided   into  two  independent  parts.   During
  122. installation  a  user  can  choose just the required part, or both
  123. parts.
  124.  
  125.                     CanonStudio Program
  126.  
  127. The  purpose  of  the  CanonStudio  program  is to print pictures.
  128. Pictures  are printed directly from disk without the need for much
  129. memory.  For instance you can print a huge 10 MBytes picture on an
  130. Amiga that is equipped with only 1 MBytes of memory.
  131.  
  132. If  you  have  a colour printer you can print with 24 bitplanes of
  133. colour  accuracy (16.7 million colours).  If you have a monochrome
  134. printer  you can print with 8 bitplanes of greyscale accuracy (256
  135. greys).    If   you   were   not   using   CanonStudio's  printing
  136. capabilities,  the  Amiga's  own  colour  printing  capacity is 12
  137. bitplanes   for   colour  (4096  colours),  and  4  bitplanes  for
  138. greyscales (16 greys).  Printing pictures through CanonStudio does
  139. therefore give a user greater precision.
  140.  
  141. The  CanonStudio  picture-printing  program works with every Amiga
  142. printer  driver  but  this  version  is  limited to just the Canon
  143. Workbench  drivers.   If  you  require a Version that supports all
  144. drivers purchase the ``Studio Printer Software'' package from your
  145. dealer.
  146.  
  147.                        Canon Driver
  148.  
  149. The  Canon  drivers  are  supplements  to  the  Commodore supplied
  150. printer  drivers.   They  are 100 percent Amiga compatible printer
  151. drivers,  even  though  they  offer  many  more functions than the
  152. standard printer drivers.  The additional functions of the drivers
  153. are controlled by the preferences program included with CanonDisk.
  154.  
  155. The programs and drivers are described in detail later.  Start the
  156. installation  by  double-clicking  with  the  mouse  button on the
  157. Install icon, found in the main drawer of the CanonDisk.
  158.

  162. Follow the instructions below to install the Canon software:
  163.  
  164.  
  165. * Configure and connect your printer as described in the printer's
  166. user manual and the Amiga system manual.
  167.  
  168. * Set your printers dip switches as described in the table below:
  169.

  181.                  Perform the "Setup for Amiga" action.

  189.                  Perform the "Setup for Amiga" action.

  191. Please note these settings reflect those of DIN A4 paper size
  192. users. US Letter paper users require a slightly different setting.
  193.  
  194. * Boot your Amiga with your usual system or Workbench disk.
  195.  
  196. *  If  you don't own a hard drive, prepare an empty floppy disk by
  197. using the system Format command.
  198.  
  199. *  We  anticipate  that  most Canon users will want to install the
  200. program  on to a hard drive.  If you do not have a hard drive then
  201. you  must  install  some  parts  (documentation  and CanonPref) of
  202. CanonDisk  onto  an  empty floppy, using the supplied installation
  203. program.   You  cannot  run  the  Canon software directly from its
  204. installation disk because it is stored in a compressed format.
  205.  
  206. *  If  your  system  has  only  a single floppy drive (and no hard
  207. drive), the installation program will cause a large number of disk
  208. swaps while it gets things prepared for the main installation.
  209.  
  210. * Double click on the Install icon found in the main drawer of the
  211. CanonDisk.   The  installation  process  is automatic and uses the
  212. Commodore  standard  Installer  program.  The installation process
  213. has  been  designed to provide on-line instructions as you install
  214. the  product.   Any  questions  that  you  might  have  about  the
  215. installation  process  should  be  answered  by  the  on-line help
  216. contained in the installation program.
  217.  
  218. The  install program will copy the driver to your system disk.  In
  219. order  to do so, you need 47 KByte empty disk space on your system
  220. disk.  Additional programs can be saved to an empty floppy disk or
  221. hard disk and may not be saved to the system disk.
  222.    
  223. !  Most likely floppy users must make space on their system disk in
  224.    order to install the driver. This can be done by deleting unneeded
  225.    programs using the Workbenchs 3.0 "Delete..." menu item.
  226.    The installation program will do the job for you if you like.
  227.    You will be asked before each file is deleted.
  228.    
  229.    Here is list of programs that might be deleted:

  231.    Sys:Utilities/Clock        (13 KByte)
  232.    Sys:devs/printers/generic  (1.5 KByte)
  233.    Sys:system/nofastmem       (1 KByte)
  234.    Sys:c/Edit                 (15 KByte)
  235.    Sys:c/Diskchange           (0.5 KByte)
  236.    Sys:c/Lock                 (0.5 KByte)
  237.    Sys:c/Search               (1.5 KByte)
  238.    Sys:c/MagTape              (1.5 KByte)
  239.    Sys:c/Which                (1.5 KByte)
  240.  
  241. * Canon BJC800 and 4550 users should note, that these printers are
  242. single  page  printers.  They don't support continuous form paper.
  243. Because  of  this the page length must be defined by the driver if
  244. it  differs  from  the  one  set  in the printer by SetupBJL.  The
  245. driver  can do this automaticly for you, in case you set the paper
  246. length  in  Workbench  preferences  to 250 lines.  Don't forget to
  247. turn  on  "Enable  Form"  in  the CanonBJECPref program!  Select a
  248. paper type of "Wide Tractor" for printing on DIN A3 sized paper.
  249.  
  250. * Select a paper type of Wide Tractor for printing on DIN A3 sized
  251. paper on BJ 230 or BJ330 printers.
  252.  
  253. *  Please note that each Canon driver uses it's own setting files.
  254. You  may  install  several  Canon  drivers  as  long  as  they are
  255. different.
  256.  
  257. *  The  installation  program also installs a README file with the
  258. driver and CanonStudio covering the software in detail.
  259.  
  260. *  In  case of problems with the software use the "Report" program
  261. described by the installed README file!
  262.  
  263. * Canon BJC users:  please note that printing 720 dpi or using the
  264. Photo  Ink  cartridge usualy requires major changes to the drivers
  265. color   adjustments.   Use  the  CanonBJECPref  menu  presets  for
  266. adjusting  the  driver  color if you don't want to do it yourself.
  267.  
  268. Note  that  the Canon BJC will only print 720 graphics in BJC mode
  269. (extended  emulation).   For  best  image  dumps  on the Amiga use
  270. CanonStudio's   CMS   for   printing  720dpi  (only  available  to
  271. registered users).
  272.  
  273. If you experience strong stripes/banding of 1mm height in your BJC
  274. 610  and  620  output:  make sure you run the print head alignment
  275. test  as  described  in  the BJC manual.  Also make sure the print
  276. head  is  ok.   Perform a printer nozzles test as described in the
  277. manual  and  clean the print head several times.  In some cases it
  278. can  help to print 20-30 fully colored pages if the print head was
  279. new.   The stripes are not caused by the printer driver.  However,
  280. your  print  mode,  dither  method  and  paper used are important.
  281. Don't  try  to print high resolution on bad paper.  You rather get
  282. worse results compared to 360 dpi dumps.  If you do experience 1mm
  283. height  stripes,  try  switching the dither method.  The BJC often
  284. prints  less  horizontal  stripes  when  using  an error diffusion
  285. (Floyd,  Stucki,...)  or  Blue  Noise dither method.  However this
  286. might slow down your printing speed .
  287.  
  288. *  Canon  BJC  4xxx  users:  please note that printing 720*360 dpi
  289. using   the  CanonBJ-EC  Workbench  driver  requires  major  color
  290. adjustments.  Use the CanonBJECPref menu presets for adjusting the
  291. driver for 720dpi support.  Note that the Canon BJC 4xxx will only
  292. print  720*360dpi  graphics in BJC mode (extended emulation).  For
  293. best  image  dumps on the Amiga use CanonStudio's CMS for printing
  294. 720*360dpi  (only  available to registered users). 
  295.  
  296. *  IMPORTANT!   Canon  BJC  150  users:  the Canon BJC 150 printer
  297. doesn't  offer  any  text  support.   Because of this, the current
  298. driver  version requires an application that prints text using the
  299. drivers  graphic mode.  Most major applications (Final Copy, Final
  300. Writer, WordWorth, PageStream, Professional Page...) do offer this
  301. feature  by  default and the Canon BJC 150 can be used without any
  302. drawbacks  on  the Amiga.  In order to make text only applications
  303. printing  on  the  BJC  150, we are working on a new driver.  This
  304. driver  will be able to print text using any Amiga font.  However,
  305. this  is a complex task and will require several driver updates to
  306. come  until  the  support  for  all  Amiga  text style commands is
  307. complete.
  308.  
  309. So  please,  watch  the Canon internet sites, CompuServe AmigaUser
  310. forum  library,  Internet (Canon's WWW sites or AmiNet text/print)
  311. and  Canon  BBS's for updates to the Canon driver as major updates
  312. are ahead.
  313.    
  314. *  Canon  BJC  210  and BJC 240 (= BJC 2xx) users should carefully
  315. note following limitations:
  316.  
  317. 1.   The  Canon BJC 2xx can't print color graphics and text on the
  318. same  page.   The  printer  can  only  print color in the Extended
  319. Emulation  set  using CanonBJECPref's "Emul" gadget. See the
  320. readme file for the limitations of the Extended emulation.
  321.  
  322. 2.   Any  try  to  print  color  graphics  with  the drivers Epson
  323. emulations will result in a bad greyscale output.  Don't try it.
  324.  
  325. 3.   In order to help you switching, CanonBJECPref offers a preset
  326. menu  for  both, the BC 02 and BC05 cartridge.  Using the presets,
  327. CanonBJECPref will be setup to the wanted emulation and the colors
  328. of  the  output  are  adjusted  accordingly (for normal NeuSielder
  329. ColorCopy xerox paper).
  330.  
  331. 4.   Note:   after  installing a PageStream 2.x driver, select the
  332. CanonBJC800  driver  from  PageStream.   The CanonBJC800 driver is
  333. compatible  with  the  BJC  210 and thus there is no BJC210 driver
  334. necessary.
  335.  
  336. *  This  note  seems  necessary  as  I  got  several  user letters
  337. reporting  problems  after not following this install instruction:
  338. Users  of  the  new  BJC 210, 240, 4100, 4200, 4550 should run the
  339. SetupBJL  program  once  after  installation.  This makes sure the
  340. printer is set to the proper emulation and possible bad characters
  341. at the start of the page are avoided.
  342.  
  343. *  User  of  the  Photo  Ink  cartridges should be aware, that the
  344. CanonBJ-EC  driver  only  offers Photo Ink when using the Extended
  345. emulation and the print mode was set to "Photo Ink".  Also, if you
  346. do  use Photo Ink, I strongly recommend registering CanonStudio as
  347. only  CanonStudio  offers  a complex color correction able to give
  348. you  Photo  like  quality advertised (by the time of this writing,
  349. CanonStudio's  Photo  Ink  output is even better of better quality
  350. than those of the Windows 95 driver!!!)
  351.  
  352. * Users that do have to switch print cartridges manualy, should be
  353. aware  of problems caused by bad treatment of the print cartridge.
  354. For  instance,  BJC  4200,  BJC  4550, and BJC 240 users switching
  355. between  the  normal  ink  cartridge  and  the photo ink cartridge
  356. should take great care in storing their cartridges.  Especialy the
  357. Photo Ink cartridge is easily damaged when touching the cartridges
  358. print  head.   If  you  do want to seal it, use the tape that came
  359. with  the  cartridge  (if  you  don't have a real container).  Try
  360. avoiding  the  (usualy orange) plastic shield that covered the new
  361. print head without taping the print head first.
  362.  
  363. Important:   use  SetupBJL  to clean the print head after changing
  364. it!!!   Otherwise  your  output  might  have bad colors (to say at
  365. least)
  366.  
  367.  
  368. After  successfully running the Install program, try printing from
  369. the  application with which you normally print.  In most cases you
  370. should  straight  away  notice  major  improvements  in  speed and
  371. quality, but you can do much better once you have adjusted all the
  372. settings   of   the   driver   to  match  your  environment.   The
  373. installation  program  is unable to adjust all the driver settings
  374. for   your  printer  because  every  printer,  paper  and  ink  is
  375. different.   It  is your task now to use your experience with your
  376. software  and  printer  to further adjust the settings made by the
  377. Install  program.   This  will  result  in further improvements in
  378. output quality.
  379.  
  380. Please  share  your printing experiences with other Canon users by
  381. sending  your  settings  to  Wolf  Faust.   This will allow future
  382. enhancements  of  CanonDisk.   You  can easily print your settings
  383. using  the  Report program mentioned in the error chapter.  Please
  384. don't  forget to mention the name of your printer, and the type of
  385. paper you are using.
